Is there anything worse than getting what you need? I’m a fan of the Coldplay song too, but when it comes to gifts you give, to others or yourself, I firmly believe you should inverse the lyrics and let the melancholy notes play out over that concept: when you get what you need (see: a vacuum), but not what you want (see: a vintage Celine bag)…

Aesthetic choices aren’t about practicality. Sometimes we use practicality to justify aesthetic choices (cost per wear, it already goes with half of my closet, it’s for the kitchen, etc). But these are the choices that should defy common sense, that draw you insatiably to them and linger in your mind for days or months if you walk away.

For Christmas this year, I desperately wanted this Sherman Field necklace (more on Danielle’s jaw dropping jewelry in a later post). My husband asked, quite sweetly, if he could buy me sweatpants because the ones I wear often are old.
